Virginia Harris is fondly known as the Pioneer of women’s athletics at Western State. Harris served in many capacities during her tenure at Western from 1972 to 2000. Harris served as a professor in what is now known as the Exercise and Sport Science and Recreation department and also served as chair for the department for many years, as well as coaching many women’s sports. Harris coached women’s softball, basketball and volleyball until 1986. During her tenure as a coach, Harris fought hard against the obstacles that faced women’s athletics in the 1970’s and 80’s. Harris’ hard work opened the door for many of the women’s sports opportunities now available at Western State.
