Paul Fields remains one of the best Mountaineer athletes of all time. In 1978, Fields placed fifth at the NCAA Division II national meet in the decathlon with a point total of 7,128 points that remains the school record as of his Hall of Fame induction day. On the program’s all-time outdoor top-10 list, his time of 14.52 seconds in the 110-meter hurdles ranks seventh, and his leap of 48-feet, 7-inches in the triple jump is tied for ninth. Fields twice captured Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference titles in the triple jump, long jump and 110-high hurdles. He also competed individually in the pole vault and 200, and was often a member of the 4x100 and 4x400 relays.
