Oliver Woods is the only Western coach to win Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championships in two sports. During his 30 years at Western, Woods established himself as one of the nation's most versatile coaches. He served the Mountaineers as head coach for football, golf, track and field, and wrestling. He is the only Western coach ever to guide his teams to conference championships in two sports: football in 1966 and golf in eight of the 20 years he directed the program. His innovative use of video and net-protected indoor practices enabled his golfers to defy Gunnison's winters and win in both the RMAC and the Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Golf Association, which included teams from all the region's major universities. An outstanding athlete at Montrose High and Colorado A & M (now Colorado State), he coached for 13 years at various state high schools, at Colorado A & M, and at Trinidad State Junior College before joining the Mountaineers in 1962. Following his retirement in 1993, he concentrated his efforts on his Rocky Mountain Family Golf School.
