Mary Ann Anderson (Zeylmaker) joined the Mountaineers in 1981 for the induction season of women's swimming and diving. In that year, Anderson and the rest of the Mountaineers finished as the NAIA National Runner-ups, much in part to Anderson's two National Runner-up finishes in the 1-meter dive and 3-meter dive.

Anderson went on to become the only woman Mountaineer swimmer to become an All-American at three difference National Championships. Anderson returned in 1982 to finished third in the 1-meter dive and fourth in the 3-meter dive, then once again in 1984 to finish fifth in the 1-meter dive.

Anderson still holds both diving records for the Mountaineers to this day, leaving both as the only women's swimming and diving records to stand from before the team was reinstated four years ago.

"(Anderson's) achievements have motivated Western's present divers to push themselves to reach new levels," former Western swimmer Danielle Ginsburg said. "Her accomplishments have driven us to set high standards and continue the legacy that was left by Mary Ann and her team before us."
