Cress was a four-event skier for the Mountaineers from 1962 through 1966. Cress was named the NCAA Skimeister in 1964 at the NCAA Championships. Heading into his junior year Cress won seven-of-ten skimeister awards at all competitions.
"He was one of the few athletes that excelled in all four events," Cress' brother John R. Cress wrote in his nomination letter. "He was equally strong in the alpine and nordic events. Jennings was always a threat to win in any of the four events."
Along with the honor of skimeister in 1964, Cress earned first place in cross country at Steamboat Springs in 1965, first place in men's jumping at USSA Rocky Mountain in 1966 and finished second in the men's 4x10 relay team at Dartmouth in 1966.
Cress went on to teach and become a ski coach at Whitefish High School in Whitefish, Mont. Cress passed away in a work related accident on August 29, 1989 near Kremmling, Colo. Cress will become the 10th inductee to be enter the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame posthumous.
