Hamish Smith was a runner for Western from 1992-97.  The New Zealander travelled a long distance from his homeland, but returned as one of the most decorated athletes in Western history.

During Smith's time in Gunnison, the Kiwi earned a national championship in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase and helped lead the Mountaineer men to a team cross country national championship in 1996.  Between cross country and track and field, Smith earned 11 All-American honors and was a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Champion five times.

"Hamish was one of the most liked and admired athletes I have ever had," former Western head cross country coach Duane Vandenbusche said in his nomination letter.  "Hamish's positive personality, humility, work ethic and great leadership will be remembered forever by those who knew him."

Upon graduating in 1997, Hamish moved back to New Zealand and had the opportunity to try out for the New Zealand Olympic Team.
