Dick Makings - who entered the Hall with his son Mike - was the captain of the 1956 team and led the Mountaineers to a second place finish in the RMAC as both a junior and senior. He also was the starting free safety for the Mountaineers and was an All-Conference selection as a senior. During his senior season he rushed for 296 yards and passed for 226 in Hall of Fame coach Willard “Pete” Pederson’s run-oriented offense. After graduation, Dick was named Registrar at Western in 1958 and then coached at Gunnison High from 1959-62
