Vondy was a wrestler at Western State from 1997 through 2002. Vondy became National Champion for the Mountaineers in 2001 and was named the Colorado Collegiate Wrestler of the Year in 2001. Vondy was also part of the 1997 Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference Championship football team that upset the eventual national champion Northern Colorado Bears in Mountaineer Bowl.
Vondy also helped the Western State wrestling team to a RMAC title in 2002. Vondy was a two time All-American, four time Academic All-American and a four time national championship qualifier.
"During Dave's time at Western he exemplified what a comprehensive 'student-athlete' is all about," Head Athletic Trainer Don Mondell wrote in his nomination letter. "Dave Vondy is one of the all-time great student athletes in Western history."
Vondy went on to be a graduate assistant wrestling coach at Northern Colorado while earning his Masters degree. Was then a coach at Holyoke High School from 2004-to-2007 and then from 2007-to-2009 at Yuma High School. Vondy was Principal at Yuma High School from 2007-to-2011 and is now the Principal at Brush High School.
