The 2001 volleyball team was the first and is still the only Western State volleyball team to reach the elite eight of the NCAA Division II tournament. The team also earned Western State's first-ever Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference championship en route to a school record 29 victories.
One of the few Western State teams in any sport to go undefeated in home contests, the 2001 volleyball team featured two All-Americans, three first team all-conference players and one second team all-conference player. Michelle Morris was named the RMAC Player of the Year and Head Coach Shawn Back was named Regional Coach of the Year.
"The women of the 2001 WSCU Volleyball Team bestowed a lot of pride in our institution for their athletic and academic achievements and character they exhibited," Head Athletic Trainer
Don Mundell wrote in his nomination letter. "They certainly have earned a rightful place in the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame."
