The 1991 Western football team is one of the most prolific squads in Mountaineer history. Guided by Mountaineer Sports Hall of Famer Duke Iverson, the 1991 team brought back the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference for the first time in 12 years with an undefeated conference record of 7-0.

Western compiled a 9-1 regular season record and ranked sixth nationally with a squad that boasted seven All-Americans, the most in program history, including NAIA First Team selections Reggie Alexander and Anthony Rivera.

Western was chosen as one of eight teams to advance to the NAIA Division I playoffs, defeating No. 3 Carson-Newman 38-21 in Gunnison before falling to Central State (OH) on the road in the national semifinals by a score of 20-13. It was the only playoff football game in Western history to be held in Gunnison.

"We set several season records on offense and won the only playoff game played in Mountaineer Bowl, Joel Meggers said in his nomination letter. "In addition, our fans were so excited about the win, they charged the field at the end of the game and tore down the goal posts."

In 1991, the Mountaineers led the nation with 46.1 points per game while recording 357.4 passing and 552.1 yards of total offense per game, two marks that still sit atop of the RMAC record books.

During his senior campaign, quarterback Jayson Merrill set Western and RMAC records in passing yards, completion percentage, total offense and touchdowns and points responsible for. To this day, Merrill still holds the NAIA record for most yards gained per attempt with at least 300 attempts with 11.3 yards.

Including Iverson, Merrill, Tyrone Johnson and Derren Bryan have all been inducted into the MSHOF as individuals.
