The 1986-89 Western Colorado men's golf teams dominated an era in RMAC golf that the conference hasn't seen up to that point or since – and those teams were inducted into the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame on Oct. 25, 2019, at the University Center.
Led by head coach Ollie Woods, these teams won three straight RMAC titles (winning by an average of 28 strokes) and back-to-back Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Golf Association (RMIGA) titles, the only RMIGA titles in program history.
Woods, a MSHOF inductee in 1998, would be named the RMAC Men's Golf Coach of the Century in 2009.
"(Western's men's golf team) remains one of the most successful golf programs in RMAC history and one of Western's most successful sports teams in general," said David Wright, a student-athlete on the 1986-87 and 1987-88 teams. "The Mountaineers still hold the RMAC record for team championships in golf."
In the spring of 1987, Western's team of Kirk Cavarra, Rick Raduziner, Kurt Reither, Kevin Rombeck, Kirk Skabo and Wright won the program's sixth RMAC title and first in four seasons. Four golfers, Wright, Raduziner, Rombeck and Cavarra, earned All-RMAC honors, finishing in the top seven at the RMAC Championships. Reither was named to the All-District team in 1987 and Rombeck earned the program's only Academic All-America honor. The Mountaineers nearly made the national tournament, finishing runner-up in the NAIA District VII tournament.
The following fall, the Mountaineer golfers earned the program's first RMIGA title. Rombeck was named to the All-RMIGA team for his performance at the championships. The RMIGA title was followed closely by the team's next RMAC title in the spring of 1988.
The 1987-88 team was comprised of Jim Belitz, Cavarra, Jim Leisenring, Jack Murray, Reither, Jeff Sigwart, Gary Thompson and Wright. Thompson earned an individual RMAC title in 1988 to help the Mountaineers win their second straight conference title by 21 strokes over Western New Mexico. Cavarra and Reither each made the RMAC All-Conference team in 1988 and Cavarra was named an NAIA Scholar Athlete. Once again, Western finished runner up at the NAIA District VII tournament.
The winning continued the following academic year with the Mountaineers picking-up its second straight RMIGA title in the fall and their third straight RMAC title in the spring. Cavarra, Glen Kelly, Mark Miller, Reither, Sigwart and Thompson were all on the 1988-89 roster.
Thompson once again led the Mountaineers to victory in the RMAC Championships, winning the title with teammate Reither placing second. Kelly was the third Mountaineer to make the all-conference team in 1989, finishing sixth at the RMAC Championships. Cavarra, Reither and Thompson each earned All-RMIGA honors in 1988 and 1989.
From the fall of 1986 to the spring of 1989, Western accounted for 10 All-RMAC selections, 10 All-RMIGA selections, three All-District selections, one Academic All-America selection, one NAIA All-Scholar selection, five team titles and two individual titles.
