Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame coach Bill Noxin's 1978 squad finished with a perfect 9-0 record, winning their sixth consecutive Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference title. Ranked no. 2 in the nation for much of the season, the Mountaineers defeated Central Arkansas by a score of 21-17 in the NAIA Division I quarterfinals. Western State lost to the eventual national champions Angelo State in the semi-finals and ended the season ranked third in the final national poll.
The 1978 football team featured five All-Americans, 10 first team all-conference players, three second team all-conference and six honorable mention all-conference players. Since that time, four players and three coaches have been inducted into the Mountaineer Sports Hall of Fame.
"I can think of no finer example of Western State Football excellence and accomplishment than the 1978 Mountaineers," former Mountaineer player and coach Skip Pritchard wrote in his nomination letter. "When one thinks of, or mentions WSC Football and its proud tradition, the 1978 football team can be point to as the mountain top...the very best of an era that set a standard of excellence that is the standard for all eras of Mountaineer football."
