The 1954 team battled its way to a 9-1 record and the school’s first-ever RMAC crown. After the season was over, the Mountaineers received word that Montana State played with an ineligible player in the victory over Western, therefore giving Western the schools only unbeaten season. The RMAC championship was all that the 1954 team could win because of the lack of national playoffs. The season featured one of the toughest schedules in school history, with victories over Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Idaho State and Northern Colorado. Coached by legendary and Western State Hall of Famer Willard “Pete” Pederson, the Mountaineers fielded all-stars Bill Rhodes, Jim Richards, Theron Bradford, Frank Oyster and Sam Boyd. The team led the RMAC for the second straight year in both total offense and rushing yardage and also ranked seventh in the nation in rushing (3,004). Rhodes, a WSC Hall of Famer, ranked second nationally with 1,125 yards.
