ORIGINS
In 1963, the Mountaineer wrestling team won its first national title in the NCAA College Division. That banner year was followed by another national title in 1964. Both were led by legendary coach, Tracy Borah. For over a half-century, Mountaineer wrestling continued the tradition with All-American’s, RMAC/Regional Title’s and individual National Champions.

The early success created a following of people who would travel near and far to watch the Mountaineers compete. They fill Paul Wright Gym every winter to watch home meets creating an advantage, an 11th man for the Mountaineers. Many years the RMAC/Regional Tournament crowd would be swarmed by a Sea of Red. Rumor has it that recruits have committed to the program because of the presence of THE RED TORNADO. Gyms are overwhelmed by the roar of the crowd.

CURRENT
The 2017-2018 season has been no different. At every event, there has been a large cloud of red, an 11th man, THE RED TORNADO, cheering on the Mountaineers. Over the last four years Western wrestling has earned over 100 pins each season and last year set a record of 137 falls. That success has been in large part because of the extra momentum created by you, THE RED TORNADO!!!
